Why we featured this post

North Macedonia is still off most family radars, and this guide shows how well it works with a toddler. Bea and Csaba travelled with Tomi, almost two, through Skopje, Ohrid and Bitola, with day hikes in Matka Canyon, Galičica and Pelister. Each stop has honest parent tips: bring a carrier for the cobbled Old Bazaar and Ohrid Old Town, use car-free Shirok Sokak for the stroller, hire a car for the parks, and bring your own car seat. Hike notes give length, time and difficulty.

Things to do

  • Hike or kayak in Matka Canyon
  • Wander the Old Bazaar in Skopje
  • Swim at Labino Beach on Lake Ohrid
  • Visit the Monastery of St. Naum
  • Walk car-free Shirok Sokak in Bitola
